Organization Name | Saugatuck-Douglas District Library |
Please tell us the amount of funding you are requesting Aware to raise for your organization from the Aware annual fundraising event. | $2000.00 |
If your organization received Aware funding in the previous years, how many clients were serviced and/or how many services were provided with those funds. If you receive Aware funding this current year, how many clients will be serviced and/or how many services will be provided with these funds? | The Library last received a West Shore Aware grant in 2021. The money was initially requested for in-person programs to be held in our new facility in its inaugural year. Because of the pandemic shut-down, we revised our plans. Instead, we hosted a community art project that ran through the sprint and summer of 2021. Members of the community submitted selfie portraits which were professionally printed, mounted and displayed in the library building. In addition to the display, we hosted a virtual instructional session and an opening reception. Because the portraits were so prominently displayed throughout the building, every person who entered the Library had a chance to view the artwork. Although it is impossible to get an exact count of unique visitors, we can safely estimate at least 3000 people each month. |

Scoring Criteria | |
1. Description of the Organization (maximum 5 points, please limit to ½ pages) | The Saugatuck-Douglas District Library (SDDL) provides our community with access to a diverse collection of books, periodicals, videos, audio recordings and other materials in a friendly, comfortable environment. The Library also provides the community with high-quality educational programs, public computer access, small-scale printing and copying services, and other informational and technological services. The SDDL primarily serves the residents of Douglas, Saugatuck and Saugatuck Township, who collectively number approximately 5,600 people. In addition to our resident patrons, the Library also serves non-resident students of the Saugatuck Public School system, summer visitors and neighbors from nearby communities. The Library welcomes all people—regardless of where they live or who they are—and fulfills an important social role as one of the few non-commercial public spaces in our area. |
2. Funding Request (maximum 35 points, total, please limit to 1 page) | The Library requests a grant of $2000 to support our second annual Winter/Spring concert series. This series of 4-6 musical performances will be held in the Library's program room on Sunday afternoons. Our space can accommodate an audience of 72. The series will feature professional musicians from various genres. This past year, we held 4 such concerts and they were very well-received. Our stated goal was to fill the seasonal gap by offering cultural enrichment opportunities during the months where other organizations have limited offerings. For each of this past year's concerts, the room was at or near capacity. Based on feedback from attendees, we are eager to repeat and hopefully expand the project. |
3. Funding Justification (maximum 40 points, please limit to 1 page) | The Library values partnerships with our fellow community organizations. We are asking that West Shore Aware co-sponsor this concert series for the requested amount of $2000. Our other funding partner will be the Saugatuck-Douglas District Library's Friends of the Library. We are confident in their continued support, but if the series is cancelled for whatever reason, we would return the grant money to West Shore Aware. Our goal is to hold at least 4 concerts between December 2024 and May 2025. If we are able to raise sufficient funds, we will be able to offer up to six performances. Although we have not yet made agreements with musicians, we anticipate each concert will cost between $500 and $800. Negotiated fees will vary based on the number of musicians in each ensemble. |
4. Summary | The Saugatuck-Douglas District Library requests West Shore Aware co-sponsor our second annual Winter/Spring Concert series with a grant of $2,000. The series will include 4-6 professional musical performances to be held at the Library between December 2024 and May 2025. The exact content of the concerts has yet to be determined, but will include a variety of musical instruments and genres. The Library hopes that these free programs will enrich the lives of community members through high quality cultural content, especially during the off-season months. The co-sponsorship of this concert series has the potential to benefit audiences of up to 72 members at each event. The grant-funded series will be marketed through the Library’s website, electronic newsletter, social media accounts and in local print media or with locally-distributed posters and flyers. West Shore Aware will be credited as the program's co-sponsor in all marketing efforts and in introductory remarks at each program. |
