Scoring Criteria
1. Description of the Organization (maximum 5 points, please limit to ½ pages)

The City of Fennville DDA exists to provide small business support and beautification of the downtown area. They do community events, improvements to physical elements, and support economic development.

The Fennville Women's Club was organized a year and a half ago. The FWC's mission is to encourage new friendships (monthly informal gatherings) and to promote programs and projects to enhance the quality of living for Fennville residents. Our first year, we mentored "at risk" young women as they worked toward securing their high school degrees. We gifted two graduates with laptops and helped them get their driving licenses. The FWC partnered (curated) with the local district library and sponsored a well attended local women's history exhibit and FWC spearheaded a community wildflower garden effort with help from the City of Fennville. We are proud that we took on the very first of the 4th Friday Fennville programs that attracted hundreds of visitors to downtown and highlighted educational activities in celebration of Earth Day. We joined the community in raising funds for holiday food and gift baskets. This past February, we hosted a speaker from the American Heart Association to present an informative winter program on women's heart health. Volunteers recruited members and raised funds at community events such as the Goose Festival and the winter holiday market. $3000 was raised through the selling of caramel apples and paper hearts and the collection of personal donations. The funds were divided and given to two Allegan County non-profits for the purchasing of AED machines.

2. Funding Request (maximum 35 points, total, please limit to 1 page)

Wildflowers support ecosystems and pollinators. They provide seeds, nectar, pollen and leaves as a source of food and life. They hold nutrients in the soil. They can improve soil health, prevent erosion and improve water quality. West Michigan and in particular Fennville, is dependent on pollinators to shore up its agriculture environment.

The City of Fennville, in collaboration with the Fennville Women’s Club (local volunteer group in its second year) and the the Allegan Conservation District planted a wildflower garden within the Fennville City limits (corner of 58th Street and 89 -Main Street)) in April and May of 2023. FWC volunteers and City staff maintained the garden throughout the summer and fall. This summer, the City and FWC plan to expand the garden (investing in more seedlings etc...) and to purchase and install a pergola/gazebo to partially shade the area and make it more inviting for visitors. Plans also include the installation of a garden bench and signage which will include community partners and donors' names. The intent is to also name the garden after the first and only woman mayor of Fennville. The signage will underline the importance of wildflowers to our local ecosystem.

The City of Fennville and the Fennville Women's Club are requesting funding for the purchase and installation of a pergola with a canopy. Lowe's Home improvement offers the Purple leaf Home and Garden 10-ftw x 10-ft L x 8ft H Terra Metal Freestanding Pergola with Canopy (Item # 6239882 /Model # LSMPG10-TR for $430.11. The remaining funds will go towards the actual installation. Whatever is not covered by the donation will be raised by FWC members who have committed to help with the costs of the bench and signage and installation not fully covered by grant.

3. Funding Justification (maximum 40 points, please limit to 1 page)

The $500 requested is a small portion of the overall expenses relating to the garden. The $500 would help us obtain an installation that will enhance the garden immensely. If the donation is less than the $500 requested or not granted, we will seek funding within our community.

The programs and projects sponsored by the Fennville Women's Club have been, up to this point, underwritten by FWC members. The club, open to all interested women, has no formal dues but when a project is selected, a chair is appointed and members vote to help underwrite or to find funding. Club members are underwriting the purchase of additional seedlings and fertilizer and the production of signage and the purchase of a bench. The City is helping provide water and is allowing us to use city property. The FWC is committed to this project.

The Fennville Women's Club plans to grow its wildflower garden which was planted last spring. The original plans have always included the installation of a pergola, a bench and signage. These items will help enhance the garden's visibility and underline its importance to our agricultural environment.
