Scoring Criteria
1. Description of the Organization (maximum 5 points, please limit to ½ pages)

Wishbone Pet Rescue Alliance was created in 2008. Wishbone Pet Rescue Alliance’s mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering of homeless pets by securing shelter, veterinary care, and permanent, loving homes for animals in need, as well as spay/neuter and other supportive services to the low-income community to keep pets in their home.
Wishbone Pet Rescue Alliance is a partner with the Allegan County Animal Shelter, providing support services such as volunteers, foster care, and medical care for the animals admitted to the shelter. We also support the pets of low-income families of Allegan County by providing free or low-cost wellness and spay/neuter services and free pet food and supplies through our pet food pantry. We work to reduce pet overpopulation through our trap/neuter/release program for feral cats. We also operate Wishbone House, a cat adoption center and resale store in Douglas, MI.
Our target population is the lost, stray, and homeless companion animals of Allegan County.

2. Funding Request (maximum 35 points, total, please limit to 1 page)

Wishbone Pet Rescue Alliance is requesting $10,000.00 from West Shore Aware to establish an emergent needs medical fund, which will be used to treat animals received by shelter with injuries or illnesses. Animals like Hammerhead, a Pit Bull mix who was brought into the shelter after being shot in the leg, requiring amputation, which costs about $900.00. Or Samson, a Great Dane who was surrendered because he needed hip surgery, costing about $3,000.00, which his owner could not afford.
In addition to animals like these, with major medical needs, there are those who are Heartworm positive, requiring treatment that usually costs about $250.00, or older dogs who have dental issues which are impacting their quality of life, and cost about $300.00 to treat.
Without treatment, these animals will suffer and may die or require euthanizatian. Having a fund to treat these animals will help us meet our objective of reducing suffering and providing veterinary care for animals in need, and will prepare them for finding their permanent, loving homes.

3. Funding Justification (maximum 40 points, please limit to 1 page)

The funding from West Shore Aware will pay for 25% of the projected total medical expenses for 2024. The remaining funds will come primarily from unrestricted donations received from individuals. If we do not obtain the $40,000.00 we project will be needed, we will spend what we have as needs arise, until the funds are gone.
Wishbone Pet Rescue Alliance's operating funds come primarily from donations from individuals in the community, with $207,000.00 received from individuals in 2023. Each year, we hold an annual gala, which netted $145,000.00 in 2023. We also participate in smaller fundraising events throughout the year, which bring in an additional $10,000.00.
We also support our programs through our resale store in Douglas. In 2024, projected income from store sales is $40,000.00.
We also seek grants from organizations which support our programs, including Two Seven Oh, Allegan County Community Foundation, the DeLano Foundation, and the Bissell Foundation. We expect to receive $50,000.00 in grants in 2024.

4. Summary

Wishbone Pet Rescue Alliance is requesting $10,000.00 from West Shore Aware to establish an emergent needs medical fund for animals that arrive at the Allegan County Shelter with illnesses or injuries in need of medical treatment that are not covered by the shelter. The care purchased with these funds will save the lives of innocent animals and prepare them for adoption into their forever homes.
With the support of West Shore Aware, animals who may otherwise suffer and die will be given another chance at happy, pain free lives.
