Please tell us the amount of funding you are requesting Aware to raise for your organization from the Aware annual fundraising event.

$500

If your organization received Aware funding in the previous years, how many clients were serviced and/or how many services were provided with those funds. If you receive Aware funding this current year, how many clients will be serviced and/or how many services will be provided with these funds?

These funds will be used towards the building of one life jacket station and the supplying of 20 (assorted sizes) life jackets for the Pier Cove Public Beach located in Ganges Township. This beach area is under renovation this spring through the middle of the summer. Once it is reopened, we think it will attract at least two hundred or more visitors to the area for the remainder of the season. When the weather changes, the station will be covered and the life jackets will be stored at a township facility until the next season.

Please provide a listing of the Officers and Board members of your organization.

Scoring Criteria
1. Description of the Organization (maximum 5 points, please limit to ½ pages)

Fennville Pullman & the Lakeshore Rotary Club is a member of International Rotary. https://www.rotary.org/en/about-rotary

Local meetings have taken place at the Fennville Township offices and Modales Winery since its initial creation. Most of the first year was devoted to the development of the chapter. There are approximately thirty members as well as a number of corporate sponsors and friends of the Rotary. Now in its second year, the Rotary hopes to double its membership.

Its first service project has been devoted to raising funds and securing volunteers for the Kids Food Basket out of Holland.

2. Funding Request (maximum 35 points, total, please limit to 1 page)

West Shore Aware is being asked to contribute ($500) towards the building and outfitting of a life jacket station for Pier Cove Beach. Discussions with the Ganges Township Supervisor have taken place and once the beach renovation is concluded, we plan to move forward in building a station on site. We have raised enough funds to cover over half of the Pier Cove station's budget as well as setting aside $1000 towards a similiar project that we hope to build at West Side County Park. (We are waiting for approvals from the County Park officials.)

History:
The South Haven Rotary Club received a grant request from Bronson Health Foundation’s Safe Kids Greater South Haven program. The life jacket project is their initiative and the SH Rotary agreed to fund 2 of them for city of South Haven beaches. The total cost for 2 stations was $1,640 of which $1100 went to the cost of construction of the stations and $540 to supply 20 life jackets at each station.
The Safe Kids Director would like to see life jacket stations on as many public beaches especially located on Lake Michigan and will provide the life jackets at cost and the staff person to help build the station as well as securing the materials for the station construction.

Rotary's objective is to provide service to the community. This life jacket station would serve as a life saving and educational tool for beach visitors in our region.

3. Funding Justification (maximum 40 points, please limit to 1 page)

The Fennvile, Pullman and Lakeshore Rotary depends on private donations for its service work. Although there are a few corporate or Friends of Rotary members, those funds have been directed towards International Rotary by-in -large. The local Rotary is in its second year and is ready to take on a significant project like this one. Up to this point, we have underwritten very small projects such as providing lice kits and an emergency medical mini frigerator for the elementary school in Pullman as well as providing volunteers and funding for the Kids Food Basket that benefits the children in our local areas. West Shore Aware would be a partner, contributing one half of the expenses related to the Pier Cove Project. Rotary's overall goal is to build two such stations. Thus we will be covering all of the West Side County Park construction expenses and one half of the Pier Cove Beach construction expenses. We will also maintain and replace as needed.

4. Summary

Fennville Pullman & the Lakeshore Rotary Club hopes to replicate the South Haven Rotary project that was built last year. We have experienced an upswing in beach incidents in recent years and feel strongly that it would be a great service to our community beach visitors to offer potential life saving equipment like these life jacket stations. There is no formal accounting of the number of visitors to the two beaches discussed above but even if by seeing such stations at the beach, any number of visitors would be reminded that safety measures are paramount. Your organization's grant of $500, could enable us to potentially save a life and at the very least educate beach visitors that Lake Michigan is both enjoyable and potentially dangerous. As mentioned above, we have raised $1000 towards this project and intend to raise more to maintain and replenish when necessary. We also have volunteers who have committed to check the site(s) on a weekly basis. We think this project is worthy of investment.S
