1. Description of the Organization (maximum 5 points, please limit to ½ pages) | In 2022 I created a traveling exhibit called The Journal Project - which includes 30 pieces of mixed media artwork and written narrative for each piece. The stories utilized were from my 40+ years of journaling throughout my life - experiencing bigotry as a young Gay woman growing up in the 70’s and 80’s and throughout the remainder of my life. And more importantly dealing with self acceptance that all of us deal with as we try to find our own way in the world - regardless of our sexuality. I believe in the absolute power of art and storytelling. How impactful these two communicative processes can help heal so many people and bridge that gap between us. My goal is to bring the exhibit to as many communities as possible and create a dialog with a greater audience - showing that we are more alike than different. |
2. Funding Request (maximum 35 points, total, please limit to 1 page) | These funds will be used primarily for the costs of transport of the exhibit and the art journaling workshops that coincide with the exhibit. Due to the size of the exhibit a rented van will be used to transport all the artwork and workshop materials. This also includes exhibiting all 70+ journals and a 25' wall hanging. I will purchase all the journals and other art materials (collage papers, paints, brushes, glue sticks, scissors, etc) for each workshop. |
3. Funding Justification (maximum 40 points, please limit to 1 page) | Funding will go towards all costs associated with the transport to the venues I successfully gain entrance to. I am currently working with GVSU and Mott CC as venues for 2024 and have numerous applications awaiting approval for 2025. Most venues schedule at least 1-2 years in advance. |
4. Summary | In these current times of bigotry reasserting itself in the world, especially in light of of the upcoming election, I hope we can all be aware of the issues that “others” face every day. Whether that “other” is a different color, sexuality, gender, and so on and so on. I believe The Journal Project is an excellent tool to bridge the gap between all of us - Gay or straight - and create healthy dialog to connect our worlds. As Audre Lourde stated, "My silence did not protect me, it will not protect you." We need to make our voices heard, over and over - we are not going away. Therefore, we need our young people to understand our history. We must: Remember - Document and Empower if we want to continue battling for our rights as a LGBTQ+ community and supporting our youth. |
