Scoring Criteria
1. Description of the Organization (maximum 5 points, please limit to ½ pages)

For more than 45 years, Resilience: Advocates for Ending Violence has been providing comprehensive services to respond to, reduce, and prevent domestic and sexual violence in Allegan and Ottawa Counties. From emergency shelter for families fleeing violence at home, to providing medical exams and collecting forensic evidence for victims of a sexual assault, we are here around the clock to provide critical, lifesaving services confidentially, and at no cost to survivors. Our menu of services addresses the complex needs of adults and children who have experienced the trauma of abuse. We empower those we serve to find their unique voices by walking alongside them as they find a path to safety and resilience. While our direct intervention services will always be central to our mission, we are proud of the advancements we have made to successfully integrate evidence-based prevention programming throughout our service area.

2. Funding Request (maximum 35 points, total, please limit to 1 page)

Resilience: Advocates for Ending Violence is requesting $10,000 from West Shore Aware to support our emergency intervention services for victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence. These services include our 24-hour help line, emergency safe shelter, sexual assault forensic nurse exams, and emergency walk-in services.

Domestic violence is a severely under-reported crime, largely due to shame and widespread victim-blaming around these issues. Also, victims often fear that friends, family, the police, and other systems designed to help won’t believe them. Furthermore, seeking assistance often puts victims at risk of further violence. Leaving an abusive relationship is typically the most dangerous time. Domestic violence homicides are far more likely when a victim is attempting to flee or end the relationship.

41.8% of Michigan women and 23% of Michigan men experience intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner rape and/or intimate partner stalking in their lives.(1) Lesbian, gay and bisexual people experience sexual and domestic violence at similar or higher rates than heterosexuals. Within the LGBTQ community, non-binary people, transgender people and bisexual women face the most alarming rates of sexual violence: about half will experience sexual violence at some point in their lifetimes.(2)

Resilience proudly serves all genders. Our team recognizes the intersectional way sexuality and gender oppression contributes to survivors' barriers to safety, and we work to break those barriers in ways that are most helpful for the survivor. The Resilience service philosophy is empowerment-based, trauma-informed and survivor centered. We create safe spaces for survivors to heal and grow. Our message is consistent: We believe you, we are here to help, and the violence was not your fault. We recognize that many survivors that we encounter have endured multiple traumatic experiences throughout their lifetime. With careful assessment, we help each survivor tell us what their immediate needs are. Assessing safety concerns is our priority in every situation. All these victim services are ongoing.

3. Funding Justification (maximum 40 points, please limit to 1 page)

Resilience’s emergency intervention services are funded as follows:
• 81% in State, federal, and United Way grant revenue
• 7% in local grants from foundations and philanthropic groups like West Shore Aware
• 12% from individuals and corporations

A $10,000 grant award from West Shore Aware would represent 1% of our overall emergency intervention services revenue budget.

4. Summary

From emergency shelter and sexual assault forensic exams to school-based prevention programs, we work at every level to advance our mission: to respond to, reduce, and prevent domestic and sexual violence. We offer high quality, confidential care at no charge, ensuring that all survivors have access to the support they need to build resilience and find a path to healing. The Resilience service philosophy is empowerment-based, trauma-informed and survivor centered. We create safe spaces for survivors to heal and grow. Our message is consistent: We believe you, we are here to help, and the violence was not your fault.

While we are fortunate to receive funding from government grants, these funds alone do not cover the cost of offering our critical programming around the clock. Local individuals and groups, dedicated to making positive change in our community, make our work possible. We are respectfully requesting $10,000 from West Shore Aware to support our emergency shelter, 24-hour helpline, sexual assault forensic exam program, and emergency walk-in services.
